Discipline    Grading     Cooperative Learning     Learning Styles    Math Standards

I've undergone over one hundred hours of intensive training in how to implement the NCTM Math Standards and the Kansas Math Standards, and have had many years experience in doing so. The NCTM Standards are a set of guidelines based on research and written by the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics. They are designed to revolutionize how students are taught and how students as well as teachers think about Math. The Kansas Math Standards are based upon the NCTM Standards as will probably be the proposed National Math Standards.

The unifying theme of the Standards is that Math should be presented as a set of basic skills and tools used to solve real world problems and as a way in which to teach students to reason. That doesn't mean that I don't spend time on math facts and basic skills. There will be plenty of emphasis there too. The Standards stress the importance of hands-on manipulative materials, as well as lots of experience with problem solving techniques. I am confident that math class will be a place for enthusiasm, for learning, and...even for fun!
