Discipline    Grading     Cooperative Learning     Learning Styles    Math Standards

Different people learn in a variety of ways. Those learning styles include:

  • visual learning (learning best by using eyes, such as by reading)
  • auditory learning, and (learning best by using ears, such as by listening)
  • tactile/kinesthetic learning (learning best by using manipulating objects [tactile], and by getting out of their seat and moving around [kinesthetic])

So, it makes sense to teach to each of these learning styles. I have given a learning style assessment to several of my classes over the years and found just what I already knew the reseach said. That is that most elementary students learn best through tactile/kinesthetic learning. I found this hard to believe because when I was a child, most teachers used only visual and auditory teaching approaches. As a result, I've concentrated over the years on addressing the tactile/kinesthetic learning style more in spite of the fact that it requires lots of creativity and patience. I've designed a variety of board games, card games, have kids work cooperatively on murals, plays, and a wide variety of other such activities. I hope to share some of these activities with you in the homework section of this site. Please keep in mind though, that this site is still under construction and more content will be added over time.
