The Reading At
Home Program
Most Wednesdays your fourth grader will bring home their reading
book to read a portion of the week's reading selection for homework. They
will help to earn a group reward when they return a note signed by a parent
or some other adult the following day. They will receive a smaller reward
for returning the note on Friday. Research shows that when a parent listens
to their child read, the child benifits greatly. The benifit is found
in the child seeing more value in reading and in practicing a skill while
an important person in their life shows approval. Even better is to follow
this short reading session with a discussion of the story, or predicting
what might happen next to the characters. The articles below furnish some
other ideas for how you can improve your child's reading skills.
