Discipline    Grading     Cooperative Learning     Learning Styles    Math Standards

Grade cards are issued each nine weeks. Progress reports will be sent home in the middle of each nine week grading period only to let students and their parents know how they are progressing accedemically and behaviorally. These are not recorded in your child's permanent folder.

New Grading Policy: Beginning In the 2003-2004 School Year

Progress will be reported using the following designations:

Kindergarten through Second grade

  • H - Highly satisfactory (90% and above)
  • S - Satisfactory (80% to 89%) (Mastery level is 80% & above)
  • N - Needs to improve (79% and below)

Third and Fourth Grade

  • Percentage grades will be reported for each Math Outcome Assessment.
  • Percentage grades for Science and Social Studies will be reported.
  • Percentage grades will be reported for each subtopic under Language Arts except Fluency and Handwriting
  • Progress in Handwriting will be indicated by the H, S, N system above.

Music and P.E. (All grades)

  • Progress will be reported using the H, S, N system above.

Work Habits and Behavior (All grades)

  • Progress will be reported using the H, S, N system above.

Explanation

Parents should not be overly alarmed if their child has an N on their grade card. This means the child scored 79% or below on the most recent outcome assessment. The child will have additional opportunities to score at or above 80%. So if a child has an N on the grade card, they should have a subsequent score of S or H. Once a child has received an S or H, they should not receive another score for that outcome.

The same logic is true for reporting percentages at 3rd & 4th grade. Students who receive 79% or below on outcome assessments should, at a later reporting period, have a score of 80% or above to indicate mastery. Homework and other course work results should be reported in the Work Habits and Behavior section.

The reason why our school distrtrict is implementing this new policy and why it seems the Satisfactory & Highly Satisfactory sections are only the top 20% of the grades, is in response to the new No Child Left Behind law which states that all children will be proficient. We expect all students to reach mastery. This is a new grading policy we're using this year on a trial basis. We welcome parent & staff input.

Parent/Teacher Conferences

Lecompton Elementary School also offers a parent-teacher conference each semester so that we can have some time to chat about your fourth grader's progress this year. The office will send out a form ahead of time that is designed to allow you to request meeting times that are best for you. Please refer to your district calendar for dates.

Questions?

If you need any other information or would like to talk at times other than at conferences, please contact me and I'll be happy to answer questions.
