Cooperative Learning

A cooperative problem solving method, Cooperative Learning focuses on subject matter as well problem solving and social skills. Employers site these as the most sought after skills in today's job market. In small Cooperative Learning groups, children work together pooling their talents toward a group goal. That goal can be a research project, studying for a test, or solving a math story problem. The list of possibilities are nearly endless.

I spend a great deal of time placing children with groups of students in which they can flourish. I work toward a good mix of personalities, genders, and a variety of other abilities and interests. I use cooperative learning as often as it fits into our activities. I find that it usually helps children get along better, work together better, and at times they each draw on their individual strengths to help their group mates constructively in ways that I will show them.

Peer Tutoring

This is a cooperative practice method in which the children are trained how to help other students with drill and practice types of work. I use this mainly with Spelling, but will be using it to increase fluency in reading and with basic Math skills now and then.
