District 343

Biography        Philosophy of Education        Resume        Ties
I grew up in Kansas City where my mother and brother still live and where my brother is a Pediatrician. We always shared a fondness for children, so it is no coincidence that we both entered professions in which kids are our prime focus.

After having several different kinds of jobs I enrolled at University of Kansas at the age of 30. There I completed my teaching degree in 1986 with an emphasis in social studies. I spent the next two eye opening years teaching fifth grade at Na'Neelzhiin Ji' Olta on the Navajo Indian Reservation in New Mexico. I returned to Lawrence and began substitute teaching in area school districts. I must have done well because I was hired here in USD #343, a district in which I had many of my subbing jobs. I taught a 2nd/3rd combination class in Lecompton for two years beginning in 1991, then was transferred to Grantville when it was still a K-4 elementary school. I taught a straight third grade there for one year, then back to a 2nd/3rd combination for two more years. I returned to

LES in 1995 to teach fourth grade. That makes this my 17th year in this district and 20 years altogether. It hardly seems possible that I've been at it that long. No wonder my hair's turning gray!!

When I'm not at school, I'm at home outside of Tonganoxie with my wife, Cheryl. Cheryl's a website designer and technology consultant and works in her home office. When I'm home I'm usually exploring the internet; playing harmonica or ukulele; reading, working around the house, listening to music, or watching DVDs. We have a very old dalmation named Woody and cats named Angella and Archie.

I'm looking forward to more fun and challenging projects with my students this year. Computers are one interest of mine. I've had my students use the Internet during the last few years for research and for enrichment. Be sure to visit The Fourth Dimension , to explore some of the research links I've collected for my students use. There are more links for children and for parents in the Curriculum and Homework sections.
