Fourth graders focus on one major reading skill each week. We generally touch on other skills as well, but last week the focus was on the setting of a story. One activity the kids really enjoyed was to go out to the Nature Study Site to describe the setting there. They described the variety of trees, the Butterfly Garden, the Stone Circle with it’s sun dial the sounds of insects, and the smell of mint as they tried using each of their five senses (I warned against using their sense of taste). Our skill this week is character. So far, children have described friends, then had a guessing game to guess who was described. You might like to ask your fourth grader who they described and how many guesses it took.
